Prioritizing Mental Health on Christmas? Is It Possible?

Mental health has become such a buzzword since 2020. And though many have used it to capitalize off self-pampering products (which is a part of self-care but not self-care as a whole) others are genuinely advocating for the mental well-being of others. And with the holidays here, by the way, Merry Christmas, how does prioritizing mental health look? First, let’s look at mental health and what it means. According to Oxford Language, mental health is a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being. Though mental health isn’t a one size fits all, there are some basics that can be included; some of which can be incorporated today.

Yes, the holidays can be stressful with many demands that cause you to neglect your well-being for the well-being of others. This isn’t the spirit of giving! And yes scriptures speak to consider others over yourself, it is not done at the expense of you being drained. However, this is not a theology class and we will get back to the scheduled program. It is possible to be giving and still ensure you are not over-extending yourself today, for the new year, and for life in general. Here are a few ways you can take back your power.

  1. ASK FOR HELP

Voicing your needs can be difficult if you’re used to doing things on your own and being that cape for everyone. But it is okay to not be able to do it all. Lean on others’ strengths in this time.

  1. TAKE A WALK

A lot is going on. It’s quite noisy. And you’re starting to break. Stop what you’re doing and go outside. Take a walk in nature. Settle your thoughts. (In reality, you don’t have to be under everyone all day anyway.)

  1. STAND FIRM

During the holidays, many have opinions on politics, on life, and most importantly, your life in general. This is not the time nor place to discuss sensitive matters that ultimately, more than likely, do not concern them. And if you have not created a boundary prior to the conversation, you may feel obligated to give them a detailed plan of what you’re doing and how you’re doing it, and why you’re doing it. But you’re not. So how do you get out of the conversation? Try, “thanks for your concern, but today simply isn’t the day I would like to discuss the matter” or try humor by also letting them know, we aren’t having this conversation.

  1. STAY HYDRATED

Hydration is key! Hydration improves mental health. It is purification. That’s all that needs to be said about the matter though more can be stated.

  1. PUT A TIME ON IT

Being a good steward of your time keeps you in control. Stewarding your time speaks to your capacity. What do you have the capacity for today? Or even tomorrow? Budget your time wisely. It is your time that you are sharing with others. They are not obligated to it.
