I had the honor to interview and have a illuminating discussion with Dr. Leslie Ray Matthews, a distinguished figure known as one of the “top vitamin D experts in the world.” With a focus on studying vitamin D deficiency in surgical intensive care patients, Dr. Matthews has made significant strides in understanding the positive effects of vitamin D therapy on critically ill individuals. His accolades include being featured at the Abu Dhabi International Vitamin D Conference and addressing the Food and Drug Enforcement (FDA) in Washington, D.C. for a record 7th time. In this exclusive interview, we delve into Dr. Matthews’ groundbreaking research, insights, and the future of vitamin D therapy in patient care.

Why is this conversation important?

Addressing Vitamin D Deficiency Disparities:

The Black community often faces higher rates of Vitamin D deficiency, attributed to various factors such as melanin-rich skin that reduces the body’s ability to produce Vitamin D from sunlight. Shedding light on this issue is the first step toward better health outcomes.

Bone Health and Beyond:

Vitamin D plays a pivotal role in calcium absorption, crucial for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Beyond skeletal health, this vitamin influences various bodily functions, including immune system support, cardiovascular health, and mood regulation. A deeper understanding of these aspects can empower individuals to proactively manage their health.

Guardian Against Chronic Diseases:

Research suggests that Vitamin D may have a protective effect against chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers. By delving into this knowledge, the Black community can explore proactive measures to mitigate health risks and promote long-term well-being.

Cultural Considerations:

Recognizing the importance of Vitamin D aligns with a broader cultural context. Traditional diets, sun exposure habits, and historical health disparities contribute to the narrative of health within the Black community. Bridging the gap in awareness can foster a more informed and resilient community.
